- Karate (空手)
- “Empty hand”; a martial art practiced with hands and feet, without weapons.
- Shukokai (修交会)
- Karate style known for its speed and efficiency in techniques.
- Shito-Ryu (糸東流)
- Traditional karate style from which Shukokai originated.
- Kata (型)
- A set sequence of techniques that simulates a fight against multiple opponents.
- Kihon (基本)
- Basic training in which basic movements and techniques are practiced systematically.
- Kumite (組手)
- Partner training or combat, ranging from predetermined sequences to free sparring.
- Ippon kumite (一本組手)
- Agreed partner combat with only one attack and one defense.
- Sensei (先生)
- Teacher or master; respectful title for trainers.
- Senpai (先輩)
- Advanced student who helps younger karateka.
- Rei (礼)
- Bow as a sign of respect.
- Dōjō (道場)
- Training hall; literally “place of the way.”
- Kamae (構え)
- Fighting or basic stance with heightened awareness.
- Yoi-dachi (用意立ち)
- Upright ready stance (“ready”).
Height Levels
- Jodan (上段)
- High level, above the shoulders.
- Chudan (中段)
- Middle level, chest and stomach height.
- Gedan (下段)
- Low level, below the belt line.
Striking and punching techniques
- Tsuki (突き)
- Punch or strike, usually with the fist.
- Oi-zuki (追い突き)
- Punch with a step forward (same side of arm and leg).
- Gyaku-zuki (逆突き)
- Counter strike with the rear hand (opposite to the front leg).
- Maeken-zuki (前拳突き)
- Punch with the front hand.
- Uraken (裏拳)
- Backhand punch with the knuckles.
- Empi-uchi (肘打ち)
- Elbow strike, especially at close range.
- Shotei (掌底)
- Palm strike or thrust with the heel of the hand.
- Uchi (打ち)
- General term for striking techniques.
- Shuto (手刀)
- Edge of the hand, literally “sword hand.”
- Shuto-uchi (手刀打ち)
- Strike with the edge of the hand (“knife strike”).
Abwehrtechniken (Uke)
- Uke (受け)
- Abwehr- oder Blocktechnik.
- Age-uke (上げ受け)
- Aufwärtsblock.
- Uchi-uke (内受け)
- Block von innen nach außen.
- Gedan-barai (下段払い)
- Abwärtsblock gegen tiefe Angriffe oder Tritte.
- Soto-uke (外受け)
- Block von außen nach innen.
- Shuto-uke (手刀受け)
- Block mit der Handkante.
- Sukui-uke (掬い受け)
- Fegender Block mit Handballen oder Handgelenk.
Kicking techniques (Geri)
- Geri (蹴り)
- General term for kicks.
- Mae-geri (前蹴り)
- Front kick, straight kick forward.
- Yoko-geri (横蹴り)
- Side kick.
- Mawashi-geri (回し蹴り)
- Semicircular or round kick.
- Ushiro-geri (後ろ蹴り)
- Back kick.
